  85. Wow, I didn’t realise these existed. Looks quite good.

  86. Sounds like someone should make thes crash thing into a simple app the police can use aswell.

  87. Correct, the butterfly effect – sweet chaos! Read this, it’s worth it and may give you some inspiration next time you are in a jam!

“A team from the University of Bristol, led by Dr Eddie Wilson, concluded that under the right conditions, one motorist’s bad driving can create “a traffic tsunami which can affect traffic up to 50 miles away”.”

  88. Ahhh, finally found the YouTube comment that explains why we get traffic waves. Chaos!

“This still wasn’t explained as well as it could have been. The reason the wave spreads is because the cars at the front of the jam accelerate more slowly then the cars at the back of the jam can decelerate by hitting their breaks.

This is partially caused by slower reaction times when accelerating compared to decelerating and partially caused by the fact that all vehicles accelerate less rapidly then they decelerate in the mechanical sense.

The best thing is for people coming up to a jam is to maintain a constant speed that allows them to arrive at the jam just as the last car in it dissipates. “

  89. Councils would use it to spend our money to stop us travelling on roads we have already paid for. Read the article here https://www.theargus.co.uk/news/19030419.londons-cycle-lanes-unlawful—mean-brighton/

“Justice Lang ruled that Streetspace (cycle lane scheme in London) “took advantage of the pandemic” to push through “radical” and permanent changes to London’s roads. And a lawyer in the case said the scheme – and others like it – could now be scrapped across the UK.”

  90. I thought this after visiting the High Line in NYC. Cyclists, scooterers and skaters should be welcomed. It would reduce the number of crossings needed in busy inner-city areas and also provide each street with 2 levels of shopfront.

  91. Read this, some lanes, such as those leading off the highway do have different speed limits. So this idea already exists, in places.

  92. in theory a good idea but as the linked to report shows, it confuses people and discourages them to get in the inner lane, as soon as they can.

  93. Ahem, fat arsed Nissan Navara owners… “The Accident Exchange claims parking prangs have increased by 35 per cent since 2014. Parking related bumps now account for more than 30 per cent of accidents in 2016. And it’s estimated there are approaching one million car parking collisions every year. These cost drivers nearly £2bn a year.”

  94. Oversized people have to pay more on aeroplanes, why don’t small car people get to pay less to park? Ramp up the costs for greedy big car owners is the ideal solution, and yes, will different sized bays – nowadays some cars are twice the size of others, at a cost to everyone else.

  95. Cars are getting bigger, not smaller. Though the bays are staying the size they were 50 years ago. So instead, just have less parking spaces, after all roads are for driving on, not parking your cars.

  96. Not going to happen as its impossible to police, but car sharing will get more common the more expensive motoring is for single people.

  97. “mirrors” or “digital displays” as many are now calling them. The days of shiny silver on glass are coming to an end. AU will be able to add so much more information we miss using oldy worldy mirrors. Check out what AUDI have been doing here https://www.flexenable.com/blog/digital-side-view-mirrors-come-to-life/

  98. More than just an idea, coming to a car near you soon!

  99. Bosch tried this in 2016. Never used one so dunno if it is any good.

  100. Aha, they are called active gas pedals. As long as they allow you to accelerate out of trouble then why not?

  101. Looks like there is a patent for this, probably doesn’t need AI though.

  102. I agree, until electricity is made greenly you are better off using one of the other alternatives to gas. Here is a decent list of options https://fortune.com/2013/11/01/10-alternatives-to-the-gasoline-powered-engine/

  103. Not sure how many deaths Boris will accept till they decide to review the situation. But these are avoidable deaths.

  104. It’s crazy that the DVLA cancel driving tests because of weather you are likely to face on the road anyways. And if they cancel more than 3 days before the test, you won’t get a refund, so you just took a day off work for nothing. I wish I could just cancel my work and put my feet up because of a bit of snow.

  105. In the UK, unless you rack up over 7000 miles per year, you are going to be overcharged. Another incentive to burn fossil fuels at the cost of others. I can’t wait until the petrochemical industry guys get stung up, they have already been knocked off the rich-list by digital pioneers. There day will come.

  109. Would be good if they played a sound while you crossed too!

  110. Think its just a concept/idea rather than a thing. Though not sure. It says in the Wired article that it could project silhouettes of the pedestrians behind it, so the motorists are aware that there are lives behind the barrier, that don’t want to be extinguished. Would this type of thing help though? Motorists that ignore lights are just as likely to ignore laser lights too right?

  111. Wow, I found this from a Google reverse image search. It’s a “virtual wall” and looks like they made it over a decade ago, why aren’t they all over the place already?

  112. Not if it sways the vote away from your guy…. Sunday’s order came as little surprise after the state’s supreme court on Oct. 22 denied a similar request to halt drive-through voting, in a lawsuit filed by the Republican parties of Texas and Harris County.

  113. Says here they are in use already – “The famous ‘Van Gogh Village’ uses Tvilight CitySense”

  114. Bad idea – just use the police for what they are paid for – if Artificial Intelligence gets control of this it will be turned into a major revenue stream regardless of it it helps anybody. Be warned…

“It is argued that cameras penalise “innocent” speeders, while doing nothing to deter more serious traffic offenders, such as uninsured and drunk drivers. Many have claimed that the rise of speed cameras has been paralleled by a reduction in conventional traffic policing.”

  115. WHAT? And give the police another way to profit rather than reduce crime?

  116. Better idea may be to incorporate it with the vest – hit something on the glove and both indicate which way you intend to turn.

  117. This is the type of thing I was meaning, but I only see them for old phones – can’t believe someone isn’t cashing in on this.

  119. The anti-roll bar on most cars does this already- its just so good you don’t notice it.

  120. already exists, good idea, simple enough to use.

  121. Silly that someone doesn’t incorporate regular parking sensors with the gearbox, so easy to do too. Love the idea, bound to be realised by someone soonish.

  122. 300 notes on amazon, you could stash a motorbike in there easily.

  123. …”Short honk plus medium honk: Your maneuver was unwise, and I am carrying a grudge. Two short honks and a long blast: Your maneuver was unwise, and all that keeps me from exacting revenge is the prison sentence of 25 years to life. Three long blasts: The prison sentence will be worth it. -*- At a traffic light” but the link is broken for me, wish I knew what it said tbh as honking is an interesting way we use to communicate, like whistling.

  124. Best to do this virally rather than try to get anyone to change the laws. Anyways, Indians and the like wouldn’t adhere to it, they honk just to announce they are on the road and can’t get it together to agree on which side of the road to drive on. Like the idea though.

  125. Somehow, I think photos would work better than these silly ones they sell.

  126. This, but it is limited to the fact that most car parks don’t digitally monitor if it has spare places, or where they are.
