General Motors introduced a similar feature (Buckle to Drive) in which a car delays shifting into gear if the driver has not fastened the seat belt.
Although automatic safety belts may have been introduced as a safety feature, they were annoying, and most people hated them.
This was a popular feature in cars, but it was discontinued by automotive manufacturers in the 1990s.
