Keep the ISS – for free
“Push it out to a Lagrange point. It’s history. Keep it.” This is a sentiment I saw on a space forum. Maybe we do this? Why not?

Interesting idea, not sure how much evidence there is for this but nice to play the universe backwards and see how it compares to the black holes speckled within.

With more investors focused on environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors, satellite imagery may provide them with key data on the environmental impact of company activities. Satellite applications include monitoring greenhouse-gas emissions from companies and regions, helping utilities optimize renewable energy infrastructure and mining data to project how climate change could affect particular industries.
“ESG is becoming table stakes for businesses, and satellite imagery helps fill the data gap,” says Jonas. “Developing technologies from both public and private companies could offer a new channel of information for investors interested in pursuing both sustainability and returns.”

This isn’t a stupid idea. It could serve to use the free parking spots we didn’t realise we needed. Read this paper https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11071-022-07829-1
Easier is to just boosting it up to 600 km altitude or so would give it a lifetime against decay of over a century. High end but existing ion thrusters could do that using the station’s own power.
So sad “For NASA and the United States, losing the space station would mean the forfeiture of more than $100 billion invested in developing the facility and billions more in provisioning and inhabiting the station. NASA has used the space station for myriad purposes, from a platform to conduct more than 2,500 science experiments to testing human health during extended human spaceflight.”
Better do that before it goes up for grabs….
ahh, yes, the “international” problem was always going to break some hearts. Like any relationship. Get over it I guess.
Loads fo stoners would love this as a chillout pad. not just Elon.
