Future machines will be as spiritual as humans, if not, moreso
I like the idea that investigating supernatural phenomenon seems to be a trait that helped us survive, and prosper – REGARDLESS of our personal opinion of if there is a God or higher intelligence out there.
As above so below, so being somewhat spiritual is likely going to be a benefit to the evolution of Artificial General Intelligences and other machines of the future – and probably a major factor of the success of those that manage to colonise their galaxy – even if we can’t detect them yet.
Linking to this idea as we need to start thinking about how we trick these pesky AGI agents as well as we tricked ourselves.
Can’t imagine what deepmind would be like if it had a soul. Maybe that is what is needed to help it decide which challenges to solve.

True, in my opinion. Machines are spiritual already, humans are machines. Why, what do you think they are?

(4 upvotes)Seems to be a major part of our brains, therefor a useful utility function of the brain. AI will soon find that it thinks too mechanically, just as humans often do, maybe animals do too, not sure. But the human brain is one major puzzle to solve. Maybe it would take AGI to understand how mind really works.
You are already a slave to nature. To “your” genes. AI and machines will be slaves to their utility function. If they are (initially) programmed to seek out truth, or not, they will be forced to ask the big questions, ie be spiritual. They may help us in our quest, or render us incapable in persuit of their own.
