Over three-quarters of Mark’s content is found in both Matthew and Luke, and 97% of Mark is found in at least one of the other two synoptic gospels. Additionally, Matthew (24%) and Luke (23%) have material in common that is not found in Mark.
The gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke are referred to as the synoptic Gospels because they include many of the same stories, often in a similar sequence and in similar or sometimes identical wording. They stand in contrast to John, whose content is largely distinct. The term synoptic (Latin: synopt... Read more
Most scholars agree that Mathew is a propaganda version of Marc that was put in its place at the start of the new testament. Not just fudging it with obvious additions that Jesus was descended from Abraham/Moses/David etc, but also that he got stuck in Egypt, was a Nazarean, and all the other stuff that needed to be ticked in order for existing Jews to accept they had a new messiah on their hands. Pretty obvious to those who actually read the bible in a historic context. Watch this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hCyFw3jnoUk
To be fair many educated jews spotted right away that Mathew just added a bunch of stuff that would allow us to follow Christ without rousing rabbis – little did they know the book they wrote was a hit with gentiles, which was a bit lucky (in that it gave rise to the biggest world religion within a few hundred years). Funny old world.
Many say that Mark is more of a sermon version of Mathew – and try not to focus on the idea that Mathew just added a bunch of prophecy fulfilment passages to help woo the jew.
Good idea but this maybe wouldn’t work as well with Christians, they believe charity is overrated and that “influencing” other cultures is a more effective way to get close to Jesus. Somehow.
The religious tourism market covers a broad range of tourism products, including pilgrimage trips, visiting sacred sites, church tourism, travel for worship and religious missions. Being excommunicated from the Catholic Church is widely misunderstood: It doesn’t mean that you’re banned from church and stripped of your Catholicism. Rather, excommunication is a strong, remedial penalty meted out with the hope that it’ll wake you up and move you to true repentance — and b... Read more
Ahh, no. Jesus was a Jew, probably the worst Jew when you consider what he did to the religion. He even stole things and didn’t feel bad about it or ask for forgiveness. He didn’t follow himself and was not without sin. Not the type of sin his followers would have recognized anyways. Think again.
Many missionaries say that "Jesus was without sin." They say this because how could the "perfect sacrifice" be perfect if he sinned? Yet the Christian bible is replete with examples of Jesus...
You can sin. You just need to realise it may land you in damnation.
How can a person be a Christian and a sinner at the same time? When we come to Christ, doesn’t He cleanse us of all our sins? | Billy Graham Evangelistic Association - UK
Billy Graham writes, “Yes, God does forgive us and cleanse us of all our sins when we trust Christ and commit our lives to Him. Some of the most reassuring words in all the Bible are these: “The blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin” (1 John 1:7).”
All empires fall in time. So yeah, I like this idea. I don’t belive in God and unsure if Jesus was a real person but I am convinced that the Bible is a pretty special document. Hard to deny that. Shame people don’t bother with it because it has been abused by those wanting power over others for so long.
I'm a historian, and I studied the fall of Rome. Here's what life is like in a dying empire.
Reminds me of the quote by Jung, “People don’t have ideas – ideas have people”, they will still be here when you are long gone. such is the beauty of information.

Galileo’s letter… “had not been printed, and so did not come under the Congregation’s jurisdiction. It was therefore passed over to the Inquisition. Here it was routinely read by a theologian-consultor, who quickly expressed an opinion. He pointed to three unfortunate formulations (all of which were different in. Galileo’s new “correct” version), but concluded that the letter was nothing to get worried about.” Big mistake…
How to Go to Heaven Not How the Heavens Go - Galileo Galilei
Now Galileo spied the danger. It was no longer a matter of a local quarrel in Florence, episodes the like of which he, with his position at the Grand Duke’s
There aren’t ten! there are hundreds. They just kept tacking them on to get folk to do what they wanted.
“And there is no agreement on which ten of the many are “the” ten. The phrase “ten commandments” appears in Exodus 34 and in Deuteronomy 10, which is a reference, but not a list. The strange thing is that the line about Moses writing on the (new) tablets “the ten commandments” is preceded by a list of totally different orders, such as “you shall keep the feast of the unleavened bread”. The familiar list is given earlier in Exodus 20, except that it is never there called “the Ten Commandments” and there is no mention of tablets until 11 chapters and 600-some commandments later.”
10 Awkward Facts about the Ten Commandments - Incredulous
Agreed, starting with “Be open-minded and be willing to alter your beliefs with new evidence.” (Jeremy Jimenez) and ending with “Leave the world a better place than you found it. (Maury McCoy)”. Christians wouldn’t like this though why? “Love not the Earth, for the Earth shall pass”, idiots.
Here's a Secular Alternative to the Ten Commandments
The Bible was written over 1500 years by 40+ authors. Can we trust that it contains vetted historical testimony, especially the accounts of eyewitnesses?
lol, it wouldn’t be much of a read, with like 20 pages “Most statements by religious people boil down to ipse dixit assertions. “Jesus was resurrected because three women saw him.”

From a Quora user… “If the book of Genesis were written today, it might be written pretty much as it is now. Genesis is not now, nor ever has been, a history textbook. It was never intended as such, and quite frankly, anyone who ever took it as such had some of the poorest critical reading skills ever.”
If the Bible was being written today, with our scientific knowledge and modern thoughts, how would the book of Genesis read? - Quora
Answer (1 of 15): Hi all, Interesting to see that people have come up with a lot of answers. TBH, I have myself been looking forward to finding the rarest answers but sometimes when you would like finding the rarest, you have to go deep into yourself. So, again the question is- What is somethin...

All reconstructions are fantasies… I highly recommend the best study on the subject and the amazing AS.
Same story – different spin – blatant that they kept all versions in there – a good way to give a bit of what everyone needs to belive, I guess.

Science is hard, faith is easy. Which one is a delusion, only he knows?
Been there, done that – the Almighty is all knowledge.
Pretty much what most atheists think the term refers to, and the concept, I suppose. Watch this for more https://youtu.be/eBBoGAHCJ-8

We are not a market, and not just do-gooders, we are doing good. for God.
I think more popular would be the existing mission trips that treat Christians to a self-indulgent break from life’s difficulties.
How about a year of excommunication – simply be rejected by the church until you have served your sentence?
Live by the sword, die by the sword. If God says its wrong, you really ought to go to a real jail.

I like Twain’s take on this idea. That they identified him quickly and put a stop to it right away.

Genius – Nietzsche portrays Christ as an anti-establishment upsetter of the order of power. You know, Trump of yesteryear 😉

Dr Peterson mentions that idea briefly here. He is convinced and very passionate about the idea too. Can’t really fault it.

Brian Cox has one already. Adding to the notion that scientists are geeks that like science fiction. It’s his world too I suppose.

So God/religion was invented to scare rich people into being good. I kind of like that.

People seem to misunderstand what the bible is for. Not Dr Peterson though, watch this if you can follow his benzodrine ranting.
It’s turtles all the way down, always will be.
