Teach history backwards
Students never get to the 21st-century issues that would help them understand the world better and by the time they have been dragged through 1066 and both world wars they are fatigued with the subject that had the opportunity to tell them who they are. Start with the previous decade and work backwards, that way they will understand some of what the teacher is trying to explain.
Gove on his-story… ““There may, for all I know, be rival Whig and Marxist schools fighting a war of interpretation in chemistry or food technology, but their partisans don’t tend to command much column space in the broadsheets”.” https://www.economist.com/britain/2020/07/02/changing-history-teaching
