Laugh tracks are gradually fading, mostly thanks to the rise of new comedy shows that focus on a different brand of humour.
They also have a psychological function; they can make jokes feel funnier, increasing audience engagement.
The laugh track concept was introduced to recreate experiences of early radio comedy shows recorded in front of a live audience. It has been around since then.
