How about these crosswalk barriers? They can be an excellent way to protect pedestrians, whether they are paying attention or not.
They are also being used in Germany!
In-ground pedestrian warning lights are becoming common on crosswalks – several countries, such as China, have deployed them.
Smartphones have become one of the biggest threats to pedestrian safety. Short of banning their use on the roads, this could be the next best solution!
