Grow food in space
One day, maybe not that soon, we will need lots of food in space. Now is the time to start working on how to do it. Yes, feed people on Earth with it first, then adapt as we venture out into the solar system and beyond. This needs to be more than just an idea, so it’s good to see progress is being made by those with foresight.
“China has developed and approved more than 200 space-mutated crop varieties for agriculture use since the 1990s. In fact, the second most popular wheat variety currently grown in China, Luyuan 502, was developed through space breeding.”
Good idea, but this is only in the early stages of becoming a reality. We can do lots in space but eat properly? Urr not yet. “Today’s astronauts eat only freeze-dried and vacuum-packed foods.”
We would need huge space greenhouses floating around. You could even set them off with robots growing food and catch up to them when we colonise the galaxy. Oh and have them plant seeds on other planets.
NASA, bless them (we all get the benefit of NASA’s work and only American taxpayers pay for it) are working on this at the moment.
