Solar flares are releases of magnetic energy from the surface of the sun. If powerful enough, these flares, and a related phenomenon called a coronal mass ejection (CME), can reach Earth – and potentially destroy mankind, before we got the hell of the planet. Maybe a deflector or shield could take the brunt of the energy the great life-giving sun could expose us to?
One of Asgardia’s goals is to protect us from solar activity. Not sure if they can do much with their tiny satellites though. Early days.
I have read about these proposed magnetic shields. Not going to happen soon unless we can terraform other planets and use their minerals to engineer huge structures in the solar system.
True, we might fix the environment only for the sun to blast us anyways. Lots of risky crap out there coming our way to be honest.
