‘The dark triad’ is what makes people successful
The dark triad – The combination of narcissism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism
Yes, it sounds bad, and in many cases, it is bad. People high on dark triad traits tend to be unpleasant to be with so try not to fall in love with them. However, in a number of studies of personality traits and career success, it was those high in the dark triad traits who tended to succeed in moving up the career and income ladders.
Even without being sociopathic, they out-perform their more conscientious, somewhat obsessive-compulsive, counterparts.
“According to a study from the University of Notre Dame published in the Journal of Business Ethics, psychopaths have a natural advantage in workplaces overrun by abusive supervision, and are more likely to thrive under abusive bosses, being more resistant to stress, including interpersonal abuse, etc etc”
Jon Ronson covers some interesting points on this in his book The Psychopath Test. Here he says many psychos are “very high-functioning people who excel in politics and business.” I reckon we could all name a few individuals who fit the bill.
