Scientists from the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology engineered a plant nanobionic optical sensor that can detect and monitor, in real time, levels of arsenic in the underground environment.
Drug-sniffing dogs are an accepted part of our modern world. In the near future, could pollution-sniffing mosses be equally common? Although plants seem inactive compared to animals, a team led by Dr. Xingcai Qin, a chemist at Nanjing University, China, has shown that a common species of moss rapidl... Read more
There may come a day when certain plants in your workplace suddenly turn white, at which point everyone will run screaming from the building – those co-workers will have been right to do so, as the white plants indicated that a toxic gas was present. Before that scenario can take place, a little... Read more
Growing plants would be a lot easier if plants could express what it is they need from you. Fret not because that’s what the Pet Plant by Junyi Heo does. The very sleek looking pot measures soil conditions, temperature, humidity, and water – calculates those variables based on the need of said p... Read more
Nice idea but they all look plasticy and cheap, If someone made one of these that looked like wood, or made a holder of wood that contained it, I would buy right away.

1987 Peter CookAs it is national tree week here in Ireland (7-13 March) at the moment, I thought a tree related post would be appropriate. So what better way to celebrate national tree week, than growing your own chair out of trees!!!!!!!!!
Unfortunately as I am currently renting a house in the c... Read more

“Instead of that guy from Salesforce saying, ‘I’m going to put money into planting a trillion trees,’ I’d like him to go and say, ‘I’m going to put my money into helping indigenous people in the Amazon defend their lands,’” Fleischman says. “That’s going to have a bigger impact.”
Planting 1 trillion trees might not actually be a good idea
Whoever wins the election, three things are certain: borrowing is going to rise, taxes are going to have to go up – and there will be a lot more trees. There may even be enough trees to replace those lost to produce all those Lib Dem election leaflets and bogus newspapers. The election campaign ha... Read more
I used to work in a plant nursery where these are used everywhere and automatically timed. I pinched all the bits I needed to make a small version at home but they got trashed by my cat. Now though I see someone is gonna make them if they get enough funding. Please fund it, I want one for me and one for my nana too.

You don’t need GM for this. But some proper solution is needed, this article gives an insight on some recent developments https://news.mit.edu/2020/plant-nanobionic-sensor-monitor-arsenic-levels-soil-1213
And BLUE moss to tell you about your air
Found the article I read years ago about this, but it looks like the idea died before it caught on.
or make your own
Agreed. £40 to tell you it’s run out of water, not that smart.
Yeah, can’t believe they don’t call them “smart” plant pots. They are good though, I thought of getting this one as its all digital.
You can get the light panels but they use soil. So the idea hasn’t quite got there yet.
Nice idea but they all look plasticy and cheap, If someone made one of these that looked like wood, or made a holder of wood that contained it, I would buy right away.
There are loads of choices with hydro now, loving some of these that don’t use soil or compost for the office.
You can get the hydroponic version on amazon too. https://www.amazon.com/AeroGarden-901100-1200-Harvest-Black/dp/B07CKK8Z78
I found this, but it’s for solid fertilizers.
Nice idea, as far as I can tell you can only get a huge thing for ride-on mowers, a simple drip feed would do it.
How about these chairs made by shaping living trees?
Making them isn’t as good an idea as growing them imho.
Highly recommend plant snap, it really encourages you to learn about the plants in your garden and the wider world.

Good cause here helps people do it for themselves
Better still… contests for political parties to promise to plant the most trees.
Just use the feeder pipes and drippers from this set.
Its called an irrigation system. Google it.

Try this one! It can identify both plant and animal species.

Great idea, I haven’t found a good free one that covers animals and plants, but there are a few options out there already.
