The European Parliament adopted its position Wednesday (22 November) on legislation to reduce packaging waste, after a tense debate on the role of reuse, recycling and bans.
Reusable packaging and retail tech start-up no-boxx is working to reduce single-use packaging waste, drive down carbon emissions, and optimise traceability in e-commerce with its reusable pouch packaging and tracking application.
Amazon teams around the world continuously work to improve packaging using a science-based approach to have a lower environmental impact, including investing in new materials, processes, and technologies.
AsiaOne has launched EarthOne, a new section dedicated to environmental issues — because we love the planet and we believe science. Find articles like this there. The widespread adoption of returning and reusing plastic packaging could help to cut greenhouse gas emissions by up to 69 per cent, a s... Read more
By 2030, the company aims to have at least 25% of all beverages globally across its portfolio of brands sold in refillable/returnable glass or plastic bottles, or in refillable containers
The ice is melting; the waters are rising. Vast spirals of plastic shampoo bottles, lipstick tubes, and innumerable razors are whirling through the seas. It’s high time to get serious (very serious) about beauty waste.
A thin, multi-layer, flexible web of self-adhering wrapping material, typically paper, foil, polymer, or metalized polymer having a first layer having indicia on an outfacing major surface, pressure-sensitive or the like adhesive disposed on an opposing major surface, and a selectively removab…
A beer company in Florida is packing beer cans in biodegradable six-pack rings made using waste from the brewing process. The rings are fit for human consumption but can also be eaten by animals when thrown away or decompose completely!
Scientists have invented edible food wrappers made from milk. They are biodegradable and more effective at preventing food spoilage compared to plastics.
Imagine the future of snacking: You grab a cheese stick. After you are done, you can eat its milk protein food wrapper and avoid creating any trash. Next, you reach for a cup of orange juice. When you are finished drinking the juice, you can enjoy the edible cup and have nothing to throw out.
“Biodegradable” is a bit of a scam – check this out… ““It’s well-intentioned but wrong. A lot of plastics labelled biodegradable, like shopping bags, will only break down in temperatures of 50C and that is not the ocean. They are also not buoyant, so they’re going to sink, so they’re not going to be exposed to UV and break down,”
Biodegradable plastic ‘false solution’ for ocean waste problem
UN’s top environmental scientist warns bottles and bags do not break down easily and sink, as report highlights the ubiquity of plastic debris in oceans
Surely biodegradable is better than dissolvable. no? “Polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH), of which MonoSol films are comprised, is a colourless, odourless and non-toxic polymer. It is produced by combining and re-arranging the three basic elements – carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. These elements come from ethylene gas – the same gas emitted by fruit and veg as it ripens – and acetic acid (known as household vinegar in its diluted form).”
Now you see it... Wrapping that dissolves in water
Wouldn't it be great if we could just wash annoying foam packaging away? According to KTM Industries, we can. Their biodegradable foam literally dissolves down the drain. Green Cell Foam is a corn-based foam packaging replacement that KTM says you can compost, dissolve in water, or simply wash down ... Read more
Here is your answer – and why its an awful idea once you give it some thought. “A round can is easier to produce by curving the sheet around a drum. It stores more volume of liquid per amount of metal used. Aluminum is more expensive than the rectangular cardboard packaging for the flats. Makes way more sense to optimize for aluminum cost to have round cans than to optimize it for “storage”.
I rant about weird things... a lot.
So, canned food is usually in round cans. Square cans would make much better use of precious storage space.
I poked around. I found other folks with the same idea. I also found a patent on a canning process for square cans... but I wasn't able to actually...
The plastic packaging problem. Why should brands care? And what are the plastic alternatives? Here are the latest and most innovative plastic alternatives.
Agreed. and this idea is spreading round the world in a way we should be proud of. However, nice article here, not sure how true it is though. They say “Political opposition to bans in the United States has gained a boost from a handful of studies that highlight the limitations of bans. In California, for example, Rebecca Taylor, an economist at the University of Sydney, found that shoppers in cities that banned bags before the 2016 statewide ban took effect used fewer shopping bags, leading to a reduction of about 40 million pounds of plastic waste. But she found in her study that sales of trash bags rose, offsetting the reduction in plastic bags to 28 million pounds.”
Plastic bag bans are spreading. But are they truly effective?

Brands should be the leading in innovation for reusable packaging.
Reusable packaging can be more effective than recycling in protecting the environment from plastic waste.
Reusable packaging is a huge hit with eco-conscious consumers.
Top brands like Coca-Cola are already embracing the idea of #refillablepackaging
Refillable packaging should be the standard for the beauty industry, given how much waste it produces.
Refillable packages are the most sustainable option; they have a smaller carbon footprint than recyclable and biodegradable packages!

Other companies and brands in the world need to follow this example!
Packaging is one of the biggest causes of environmental pollution. Adopting net zero carbon packaging can thus offer a huge boost to
For now, the best you can do is spray painting your gift, and hope the package is robust enough not to sustain any damage from the liquid spray.
Not a spray-on, but here is a patent for a self-adhering wrapping paper that can make gift wrapping easier. https://patents.google.com/patent/US20160016710A1/en
Spray-on wrapping paper is just a dream for now, but it could be an amazing invention

(2 upvotes)This foam does it – but does it turn back into crappy foam stuff when it dries out again? Not sure if this is a good idea or not tbh.
If that’s the case, let me introduce you to corned beef…
