Even if scientists managed to build a space elevator, the risks of such a structure (for example, a collapse due to a terrorist attack or natural disaster) would still be too high.

If a space elevator collapsed, what would the resulting damage look like on the planet's surface? Assuming the structure is large/sturdy enough to hit the surface.
